The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is inviting the public to look online at plans to replace the bridge that carries Route 318 over Interstate 376 in Shenango Township.

According to PennDOT, the new bridge will have a higher vertical clearance of approximately two feet and will meet the current highway standards.

Work will also include reconstruction of Route 318 to tie the new bridge into the existing roadway. Additionally, the project will include reconstruction of three interchange ramps, drainage upgrades, guiderail replacements, roadside signage and pavement markings.

Minor shoulder improvements and roadway repairs to Interstate 376 under the new bridge will also be completed.

Work is expected to begin sometime between June and November this year.

The bridge replacement is necessary after a truck hit it on Dec. 7, causing heavy damage to it.

This lead to a partial removal of the eastbound lanes the following day and eventually the announcement the bridge would be completely replaced last month.

A detour using Route 18 and Interstate 376 is in place for Route 318 traffic due to said removal and will remain during construction of the new bridge.

PennDOT says a short-term closure of the westbound lanes on I-376 will be needed to remove the remaining span of the bridge.

The public plans display for the Route 318 Bridge Replacement, which will be held online only, includes a handout, plans, and an online comment form. It can be accessed by visiting the PennDOT District 1 website under the Design and Construction Projects link.
