YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A Youngstown man is being held in the Mahoning County Jail on the charge on a felonious assault charge in relation to a woman's death.

According to Youngstown Police Captain Jason Simon, officers were called to a home on the 1500 Block of Victor Avenue Thursday by 24-year-old Lamarie Smith in reference to a fight.

Simon tells 21 News when officers arrived, the victim, identified as Deeanna Summers was unconscious. She was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Simon tells us the reason Smith is charged with felonious assault and not murder at this time is police are waiting on forensic results to determine Summers's cause of death. Simon says Smith's admitted to fighting with Summers, so he was charged with assault.

If the cause of death is found to be connected to Smith, Simon says additional charges could be filed against him.

In the meantime, Smith was arraigned in the Youngstown Municipal Court on his felonious assault charge at 1:30 p.m. Friday. He did not enter a plea, but bond was set at $750,000 cash surety.

If Smith is bonded out, he is ordered to be under electronic monitoring.
