Girard robotics team finishes second out of 55 teams in regional competition

A robotics team from Girard High School took home the silver at the Buckeye Regional in Cleveland over the weekend.
The RoboCats competed in the competition with 55 other teams from seven states as well as Beijing and Canada held at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland.
The theme of the competition was Crescendo, based around music challenges. This year the team needed to design a robot that could pick up rings that were 14 inches in diameter, manipulated into a eight foot high goal or a three foot low goal.
Additionally, the robot needed to hang from a chain and score an additional ring while doing so.
About 55 teams competed in 10 qualifying matches on Friday and Saturday. Eight teams then advanced to qualify for playoffs on Saturday afternoon.
The team now expects to compete at the state competition in Worthington, Ohio, on May 11, which will feature the same theme and challenges.
A fundraiser for the team will be held Aug. 3 at Deer Creek in Hubbard, Ohio to help raise around $45,000 for the group's expenses.
