1999:  Youngstown area schools, which had already been working toward improved security following other school shootings, are accelerating their efforts in the wake of the Columbine High deaths of 15 students, including two shooters. Boardman Superintendent Larry Saxton says his district has established a hotline on which students and faculty can leave anonymous tips. 

Christopher Paul Curtis, author of "The Watsons Go to Birmingham -- 1963," the 1996 Newbury Award winner, was the featured speaker at Youngstown State University's English Festival.

Warren Councilman Alford Novak is calling for a meeting between city and county officials to determine if Warren is getting its due from the 2.5 percent hotel and motel tax established in 1980.


1984: In a break from tradition, the local Sierra Club, which has 100 members, says it will not support Mill Creek Park's 1-mill tax levy because the park board and superintendent are "no longer maintaining the parkland in a natural state or limiting development."

ABC News announces that Ohio State University will host a May 6 debate between the Democratic presidential candidates. 

Fred Martin of Fred Martin Ford in Austintown is installed as president of the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio. 


1974:  Marvin Itts, president of the board of Saramar Aluminum Co., is described as a great humanitarian whose work knows no boundaries of race, creed, or religion, as he is presented the national B'nai B'rith Guardian of the Menorah award. 

Armco and Republic Steel are scrambling for alternative sources of iron ore after a Minneapolis federal judge ordered Reserve Mining Co. closed because it did not produce plans for disposing of taconite tailings. 

According to the nation's top energy official, motorists may pay 60 cents per gallon for gasoline by summer.

1949:  The Ohio Medical Association adopts a policy statement favoring a voluntary health plan and opposing any form of "socialized medicine."

The James A. Henderson Co., Youngstown Chevrolet agency, can legally forbid car buyers from reselling their new autos within six months of purchase to anyone but the dealership, the 7th District Court of Appeals rules. 

The Struthers Iron and Steel Co.'s old Anna blast furnace in Struthers is leased to General Motors Co. for five years.  The furnace had been producing pig iron for Kaiser and Frazer automobiles.
