An unusually strong solar storm hit Earth Friday, May 10, which gave viewers across Ohio and the Mahoning Valley the perfect opportunity to see the northern lights.

The lights are being caused by a rare "severe" geomagnetic storm - the first issued since 2005.

The northern lights are expected to last through the weekend and into next week.

In the meantime, above is a gallery of photos submitted by viewers.

Check them out and don't forget to send us your photos of the phenomenon at [email protected].
