Youngstown Playhouse celebrates 100 years with books, documentary on playhouse's history

2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the Youngstown Playhouse and a new project is looking to highlight the century-long history of the venue.
The Playhouse announced "The Centennial Project" on Monday, May 13, which is comprised of two books, a 10-part documentary and a series of videos featuring one-on-one interviews with Playhouse actors and staff.
The two books are "A Place Where the Stars Still Shine" and "A Youngstown Playhouse Scrapbook" both by J.E. Ballantyne Jr. The books will focus the complete history of the Playhouse from 1924 to the present day in written and visual form.
Ballantyne tells 21 News that researching for this project was fascinating because he learned so much about the history of the Playhouse while digging through the archive room.
"I've been here since 1973, but I had no clue about the history of this place until I started digging around in that room. The history of this theater is absolutely fascinating. People have no idea about the history of this place," Ballantyne said.
There will be five pre-sale promotions for the books that will begin later in May. These promotions are as follows:
