Learning how to drive is an important part of life when growing up, but it can sometimes be a burden.

Now, the Boardman Township Police Department has partnered with the Boardman School District to launch the Drive to Succeed Scholarship Program, aimed at easing the financial burden for teenagers looking to get driving lessons or get their license.

"Our aim is to equip our youth with the knowledge and skills needed to safely operate motor vehicles - reducing accidents and fatalities among [them]," said Sergeant Paul Grimes.

Scholarships will be offered to Boardman High School students between 15 and 17 based on their financial need.

About 300 teenagers will be able to get driving lessons and their license through this program, according to a news release from the police department.

The $148,885 grant, given to the police department by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office will be distributed over two years.

Applications are available through the Boardman High School Counseling Department.
