At this expo at the Lawrence County Fair Grounds the American Kennel Club dog breeders, trainers, and dog owners showed their dog's talents in competition.

They also gave tips and tricks about buying a dog without worrying if a bad deal or scam is biting you.

Luke Ericht, an AKC breeder who won the title of top breeder last year tells us doing research is important before buying a dog.

He and his wife breed Shih Tzu's.

"Comet was the number one dog of all breeds in the United States for all of last year, and he won the AKC National Championship Dog Show in Orlando, the largest dog show of the year. Plus he won the toy group at Westminster just recently," Luke Erich said.

Meeting the puppy's parents can give you an idea of the temperament of the adult dog you're looking to buy.

"The most important thing you can do is research on the people you're buying your dog from. Make sure their dogs are well bred, happy, and healthy," Marc Peluso, a trainer at Enforcer Working Dogs.

"The breeder should be open to you coming and observing the pups and not just giving them the payment. However, there are some renowned breeders that people do Venmo or send money to them, but they have already been established. Or if you're still getting a dog off Craigslist, make sure they do the health testing and have hip certifications, and they're not asking for money upfront,"  he added.

He also tells 21 News folks should not fall for scams involving or requesting gift cards

A judge for the event tells 21 News that AKC.org lists every breed and their temperaments so you don't select a breed that doesn't fit with your lifestyle and the commitment you can give.

They even have a place where you can put in different criteria and it helps you find the breed that's right for you. Like you can say how much room you want to do, how much activity you want the dog to have, and it will come up with different suggestions," AKC Judge John Constantine-Amodei said.

"If you're looking for a particular breed the best way is to go to the breed parent club website. Let's say you're looking for a collie. You would go to the Collie Club of America website and there they have breeder referrals where you can check out the breeders they put on a list," Constantine-Amodei added.
