1999: John Chicase testified in court that when his friend Phil Chance asked him to contact Mobster Lenny Stroll for financial backing in Chance's run for sheriff, Chicase warned him that it would be like selling his soul. Chance responded that he liked "riding the edge."  Chance is being tried for racketeering, extortion, and obstruction of justice. 

Since 1986, Second National Bank of Warren has expanded from eight branches to 36 and now has a presence in nine counties. 

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. pitched his proposal for a private prison near Wellsville to a crowd that was decidedly and enthusiastically against the idea despite his prediction that it would create more than 600 well-paying jobs.  

 

1984: Mahoning Valley racketeer Orland Carabbia is sentenced by U.S. District Judge John Manos to seven years in prison for smuggling a ton of marijuana into the country and for helping to make a bomb that was detonated at the home of a business rival in Lancaster. 

Mark A. Hanni, the 26-year-old son of Atty. Don L. Hanni Jr., chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, has been named deputy director of the elections board. Dr. William Binning, chairman of the Mahoning County Republican Party, said he went along with the hiring as part of a deal that increased the salary of Elections Director James Dellick, but he said Hanni's hiring was a case of "blatant nepotism."

The Party Bar at 479 N.E. River Road in Lake Milton is destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin.

  

1974: The Voyager Inn, downtown Youngstown's newest hotel, closes pending the outcome of a foreclosure action. It may become a Holiday Inn. 

The final urban transportation plan compiled by the Eastgate Development and Transportation Agency calls for 247 highway projects in Mahoning and Trumbull counties by 1990 at a cost of $327 million. 

The city of Warren opens its week-long 175th anniversary celebration with the annual "Walk Along Millionaires' Row." William Hawkins Jr. and Emily Webster head the committee.

 

1949: Thundershowers cool the Mahoning Valley, which had been suffering under two days of 95-degree heat.

Mary Haddow, director of elementary education for Youngstown City Schools, tells the Optimist Club, "There is no substitute for a good home, yet there are times when a classroom teacher must take on this role."

Bishop James McFadden will break ground for the new $200,000 St. Lucy Church at 12th Street and Tenney Avenue in Campbell.
