Speed cam enforcement warning period begins at 21 schools in Youngstown
The Youngstown Police Department is reminding drivers that it will resume efforts to protect children in zones around 21 schools by implementing a photo enforcement program using speed cameras.
Starting Wednesday, September 4, 2024, a two-week warning period will be in effect. During this time, drivers who exceed the speed limit in designated school zones will receive a warning letter instead of a citation. However, beginning on September 18, 2024, violators will face fines.
The program utilizes the TrueBlue Single Beam per-lane LIDAR system, which has proven highly effective in reducing speeding in school zones. Since its launch in January 2023, the initiative has seen an average 90% reduction in speeding motorists.
To better alert drivers, flashing yellow beacons have been installed in school zones without preexisting flashers. These beacons will indicate the reduced 20-mph speed limit during arrival and dismissal times.
