1999: During negotiations with the United Automobile Workers union, General Motors Corp. guaranteed many employees lifetime employment.

Salem firefighters will have wage parity with police officers under a new three-year pact. A captain's base pay will range from $19,200 to $31,200. 

Country music star Tim McGraw closed the Canfield Fair with a concert of his new and old hits before a jammed grandstand. 


1984: Youngstown Mayor Patrick Ungaro says a group of local businessmen have expressed interest in buying the abandoned Voyager Motor Inn downtown.

Dean Foods Inc. of Franklin Park, Ill., announces the purchase of the Brookfield Dairy Co., a division of Hawthorn Melody Inc.   

The New Castle Area School Board officially cuts off the pay and health insurance of the district's striking teachers. 


1974: Construction of the Bliss Music and Fine Arts Center at Youngstown State University is put on hold while a Pittsburgh laboratory is brought in to X-ray concrete beams, columns, and slabs to determine the building's structural stability. The Building Trades Council raised questions about the integrity of the structure.

Directors of Lykes-Youngstown, parent of Youngstown Sheet & Tube, declare a 25-cent-per-share common stock dividend during a meeting in New Orleans. 

A Commerce Department report says the Youngstown-Warren Metropolitan Area has grown by at least 8,200 people since the 1970 census. 


1949: Concern over a fatal crash at the Cleveland Air Show leads to Youngstown attempting to increase its insurance coverage for an upcoming Youngstown show. 

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio lifts virtually all restrictions on converting heating units from coal to natural gas.
