1999: Youngstown State University fall enrollment dropped from 12,533 to 12,223, the ninth drop in 10 years and the lowest total in 30 years.

Jim Thome hits a fourth-inning grand slam, helping the Cleveland Indians to an 11-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox in game two of the American League Division Series.

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., D-17th, joined House Democrats in passing a patient-protection bill that allows consumers to sue their managed-care providers, while Rep. Phil English, R-21st, Pa., joined Republicans in opposing the bill as too broad. 


1984: Several events will commemorate the 90th year of publication of "Catholic Hungarian Sunday," a weekly bilingual newspaper of international circulation published in Youngstown by the Franciscan fathers of St. Stephen Province.

The Vindicator/YSU poll shows Prosecutor Vincent Gilmartin, seeking his fifth term, and his Republican challenger, Gary Van Brocklin, are running neck and neck.

The Supreme Court of the United States will take under consideration a lower court ruling that barred New York City from sending its public school teachers into parochial schools to conduct remedial classes as part of a federally funded program. 


1974: A beautiful fall day, with blue skies and temperatures in the 70s, brings thousands of visitors to Youngstown's new Federal Plaza.

The first Pontiac Astre rolls off the Lordstown GM assembly line, which will produce 74 Vegas and 26 Astres an hour.

Ohio Bell Telephone Co. is seriously considering charging customers for excessive directory assistance use. Doug Shasby, district manager, reports 20,000 directory assistance calls daily in the Youngstown district. 


1949: Edward M. DeBartolo, president of Belmont Shopping Center Inc., says he will build a 12-store, $500,000 shopping center on Belmont Avenue between Catalina and Francisca avenues.

Three members of the Young Progressives Association file suit seeking $300,000 from Youngstown Police Chief Edward Allen for their arrests in July during racial tensions at city swimming pools.

Employees of the W.O. Strausbaugh Motor Co. on Wick Avenue are the first to receive an award of merit in the Community Chest 1949 campaign.
