Another 1.7M pounds of meat, poultry recalled from schools, stores over contamination concern

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture has added 1.7 million pounds of product to its earlier recall of nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry due to contamination concerns.
The USDA says the updated recall of BrucePac items includes additional products and production dates of items that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
An additional 1,779,040 pounds of product is subject to recall, increasing the weight from 9,986,245 to 11,765,285 pounds.
The USDA says the recalled products were distributed to schools. A school distribution list is not available at this time. When available, the distribution list will be posted on the FSIS recall website.
Late last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service urged consumers to be aware of possible contamination of the ready-to-eat meat and poultry products sold at major retailers across the country.
The recalled items sold under numerous brand names including Dole, Fresh Express, Taylor Farms, Boston Market, Michelina's, Jenny Craig, and Atkins, were sold at retail chains including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Giant Eagle, Meijer, Target, Amazon, Seven Eleven, Aldi, GFS, and Trader Joes.
The recalled products were produced between June 19, 2024, and October 8, 2024, and have been distributed to various retailers and food service establishments nationwide. The products bear the establishment numbers "51205" or "P-51205" inside or under the USDA mark of inspection.
Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for any recalled products and discard them immediately.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious illness that primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women may experience miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature delivery.
FSIS is working with BrucePac to trace the distribution of the recalled products and notify affected retailers and food service establishments. The agency is also investigating the source of the contamination.
