Pennsylvania secretary to host daily briefings to combat election misinformation

Pennsylvania - For the next week, leading up to election day, Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt will host virtual updates for voters in the battleground state.
During the first update on Monday afternoon, Schmidt said he is focused on voters having steady and correct information this election. That means sorting through what is factual and what is not, in a world where claims online and from some candidates don't have voters' best interests at heart.
"[Voters] should rely on trusted sources of election information," Schmidt said.
The secretary said some of those reliable sources include county elections offices and the Pennsylvania Department of State. He says there are safeguards aimed at ensuring the integrity of their election process and preventing election intimidation.
One of those safeguards is an elections threat task force. Schmidt said the task force included federal, state, and local law enforcement, as well as election administration partners.
"[They] meet monthly to maintain clear lines of communication and share information needed to mitigate against threats to the election process and to protect voters," Schmidt said.
Schmidt also informed voters on the deadlines for mail-in voting. The last day to apply for a mail-in ballot is Oct. 29. The deadline to return a mail-in ballot to county elections offices is 8 p.m. on Nov. 5.
The daily updates will be streamed live on PA Cast at 1 p.m. and on the department of state's Facebook page.
