1999: The family of 4-year-old Luis Cruz, who was killed by gunfire that pierced the wall of his Youngstown home, express outrage at the sentences of eight years in prison given by Judge Maureen Cronin after they pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. A 17-year-old defendant got seven years. 

The list of potential candidates for Youngstown State University president has been trimmed to 15. It will be cut again to fewer than ten before interviews are conducted in Cleveland in December. 

The union representing Niles police officers has filed a grievance after Chief Bruce Simeone announced that the Ohio State Highway Patrol will be asked to investigate any accident involving a department member in the future. 

1984: Using the 1960 presidential election as a barometer, Mahoning County officials expect 137,000 voters to cast ballots on Election Day. 

Authorities arrest Raymond Luc Levasseur, one of the FBI's 10-most-wanted, as he rode with his wife and three children in a van in Deerfield.  He was wanted for a string of bank robberies and bombings.

1974: Repairs at Lake Milton are expected to begin in the spring, says City Engineer Edmund Salata. 

The Youngstown Police Department narcotics unit culminates a six-month investigation with raids in which 20 people are arrested, and drugs valued at $54,000 are confiscated. 

Sheriff James A. Traficant Jr., a Democrat challenging U.S. Rep. Lyle Williams, a Republican, repudiates the support of Don Hanni Jr., chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party. Hanni had recently made conciliatory statements toward Traficant, whom he had earlier sued for $2 million and attempted to have committed to a mental institution. 

1949: The 50th anniversary of the construction of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in West Austintown is celebrated with two services conducted by the Rev. M.A. Hayes, conference superintendent. 

Common Pleas Judge Blake Cook of Portage County issues an injunction ordering the Trumbull County Board of Elections to remove the Hubbard Village annexation petition from the Nov. 8 ballot. 

The Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. and United Steelworkers of America will meet in "exploratory talks" to end the five-week strike.
