Youngstown State University has received a $148,000 gift for the Kilcawley Center's "Centered on the Future" campaign.

The gift came from the estate of Richard Zarilla, a 1960 graduate of YSU. According to a press release, Zarilla earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the university and went on to achieve two doctorates.

He was also a faculty member at Reading Area Community College where he taught chemistry until his retirement. Zarilla died in 2021.

The money will be used for the renovation and modernization of the Kilcawley student center. YSU Foundation president Paul McFadden is quoted in the release thanking Zarilla's estate for the donation.

"His estate's gift is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that planned gifts can have on our university and our students. This contribution will help shape the future of Kilcawley Center and the broader YSU community for many years to come," McFadden said.

Kilcawley Center Chair Scott Schulick added that this project is an "investment into the future of [YSU's] students and campus community."
