Austintown woman on trial for fentanyl overdose death of toddler

An Austintown woman is on trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court after authorities say her son died of a fentanyl overdose just days before his second birthday.
Brianna Zagotti, 31, was indicted in late 2023 on charges of involuntary manslaughter and endangering children.
Police and the coroner were called to Zagotti’s Compass West apartment on July 7, 2023, to investigate a call made about an unresponsive child.
An officer found the parents administering CPR to the toddler on the bedroom floor.
Police, firefighters, and paramedics continued CPR until a doctor declared that the child, Amari Zagotti, did not survive.
Zagotti and the child’s father told police that there were no drugs in the apartment that the child could have encountered.
According to a criminal complaint, the child died from ingesting the powerful opiate fentanyl and died from acute fentanyl intoxication.
