The mother of an East High School student says she's been left in the dark about her son's enrollment status, after an incident she says left him pepper sprayed and put in handcuffs.

Sharita Williams says her 16-year-old son is special needs and has an IEP through the school, and throughout the school year, being left behind has been a recurring issue, including Wednesday afternoon.

"Yesterday he was supposed to get on the bus to come home. They failed to give him a ride home."

Sharita says that a teacher, and a liaison help to facilitate her son's transport from the school on Bennington Avenue, to their home on Youngstown's south side, near Midlothian.

"They had a substitute, they failed to communicate this to him so he got left behind.", Williams added.

Sharita says shortly after she received a phone call from her son. She says she instructed him to ask for help.

"When he asked for help they blamed him, it upset him, of course it's going to upset him. He's stuck. He doesn't know what he's going to do and I'm all the way in Boardman so I'm going to have to take a long ride and it's going to take a minute.", she explained.

Sharita is still unsure of what happened prior to arriving at the school. "All I know is that he was pepper sprayed", adding that he was at the hospital for several hours getting his eyes flushed.

The boy's mother has been unsuccessful in trying to reach school administrators, her son hasn't been back since the incident. She's under the impression her son is expelled.

The assistant principal at East High School was unable to comment on the situation.

Stacy Quinones with the Youngstown City School District issued this statement:

"Youngstown City Schools is dedicated to maintaining a safe school environment. The district adheres to its established processes and board policies when addressing any instances of potential misconduct, prioritizing the well-being of both scholars and staff.", However she didn't comment on this particular situation.

Sharita says her son doesn't get into trouble, has never been suspended, or served a detention.
