One look at a humble strip mall along South Avenue in Boardman wouldn't suggest an art gallery.

"Driving by it might not be the best storefront or the catchiest appearance," says owner and curator Sophia Derobbio.

But a closer look brings The Valley's newest and fastest growing art venue into focus.

"Everybody that walks through the door is like blown away," Derobbio says.

Studio South Art Exchange hosts dozens of pieces by artists from every corner of the region.
A feature artist is showcased every first Friday of the month, but this Friday is different.

"Tonight we are privileged enough to have two amazing local artists," Derobbio explained.

Donna Flick specializes in macrame' and fibre arts.
She had everything from chandeliers to boho wall hangings for patrons to feast their eyes on.

Nick Chicone's forte is painting and 3D masks, along with figurines, chess boards and mini sceneries.
Many of their pieces go for under 20 bucks.

"They're amazing!" said Derobbio.

Throw in a little live music, and you've got Friday night plans.
Already having had a consignment store in her space, Derobbio made this expansion a labor of love.

"Being an artist myself, I know we need more creative spaces in this area. We specialize in the unique and inspired and hard to find," she said.

Which goes to show you shouldn't judge a book - or an art studio - by its cover.

"If you come in, I guarantee we've got the Butler's...kicked," Derobbio joked.

Studio South hosts workshops throughout the year as well. For more information on that, to have your art featured, or to provide live music for a showcase, contact the studio at 330-245-4126 or visit their website.
