LORDSTOWN, Ohio -

Democrat Ted Strickland brought his campaign for the U.S. Senate to Trumbull county on Monday. He was joined by Congressman Tim Ryan during a stop at the union hall of United Autoworkers Local 1112 in Lordstown.

Strickland said he opposes Fast Track legislation which allows the President to negotiate trade agreements and Congress can only vote yes or no. Strickland says not giving Congress any chance to amend trade deals is wrong.

"If we had an amendment that guaranteed worker rights, if we had an amendment that guarantees environmental standards that would not put our companies and workers at a disadvantage, it's possible to have a trade agreement that i would support," said Strickland.

He says past trade agreements like NAFTA have not provided the benefits that were promised.

"And I think there's every reason to believe that this TPP would be equally detrimental to our economy," Strickland said.

While the autoworkers have been strong Obama supporters, the President of Local 11-12 says not on this issue.

"It's not very often that I disagree with our President But I disagree with him on this.  I believe that Fast Track will hurt working families, it will hurt middle class Americans," said Local 1112 President, Glenn Johnson.

The Trans Pacific Partnership, or TPP, would establish a trade agreement with 12 countries. Supporters say the U.S. might become less competitive globally if it disengages from further trade agreements, which would divert trade to someone else.
