COLUMBUS, Ohio - The speed limit on the Ohio Turnpike will be increasing this Thursday at midnight. Beginning April 1st, the speed limit on the turnpike will go up to 70 miles an hour.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol tells 21 News it has not taken a position on the increase in speed limit, but will vigorously enforce the law.

Sergeant Terrell Campbell from the Swanson Post, just west of Toldeo, says the change calls for an increase in caution. "We have double and triple trailers in combination on the turnpike, and some of these vehicles are in excess of 100 thousand pounds. At times there is going to be an increased stopping distance for these vehicles," Campbell said.

The increase in speed, up to 70 miles per hour, is for the Ohio Turnpike only.
