NILES, Ohio - The city of Niles is joining Weathersfield Township in opposing part of the Shale Boom.

The issue in question is brine injection wells in Niles and Weathersfield. Niles City Council has passed a resolution opposing a brine injection well site proposed along Route 169 in Weathersfield, about five blocks from downtown Niles.

In a letter to Governor Kasich and other state officials, Niles Mayor Ralph Infante said the primary concern is the safety of residents and businesses near the well sites.

The mayor also cites concerns that having an injection well at that location would damage prospects for a Joint Economic Development District between Niles and Weathersfield Township.
