Visitors to Mill Creek MetroPark's Lake Newport are still seeing and smelling the result of heavy rainfall from late last month.

More dead and decaying fish could be seen in the lake and points downstream on Monday.

Park officials tell 21 News that the fish kill is associated with the same circumstances that caused fish to die earlier this month.

Authorities contacted wildlife officials and the EPA at the time, who determined that the fish died because runoff from recent rainfall had depleted oxygen levels in the 60 acre lake. EPA officials tell 21 News water runoff caused the city of Youngstown's combine sanitary and storm sewer system to overflow, essentially discharging sewage into Lake Newport, which then depleted the oxygen levels.

Although officials said that oxygen levels have returned to normal, they say park goers can expect to see the dead fish for some time.  They add there is an ongoing effort to clean up areas around the lake.  Boating, kayaking and fishing are still permitted.

Larger, older specimens are especially vulnerable to the low oxygen levels according to park authorities.
