NILES, Ohio - The government is helping the financially strapped city of Niles protect its citizens from fire.

The Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday awarded the city $1,007,352 from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, according to Congressman Tim Ryan.

Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia says the grant is to be used for additional manpower only.

Fire Chief David Danielson says the grant will enable the department to reach its authorized staffing level for the first time since 2007.

In  related story, Mayor Scarnecchia tells 21 News that he will withdraw his earlier proposal to eliminate the city's policy of having a minimum number of police and firefighters.

The goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and emergency medical service organizations.

Operations and Safety grants can be used for hiring, professional training, wellness and fitness programs equipment, personal protective equipment, modifications to facilities, and supplies that support firefighting and non-affiliated EMS operations and safety.
