AKRON, Ohio - One of the Youngstown State University players who was suspended from last weekend's semifinals game appeared in a Summit county courtroom Wednesday morning for arraignment on gun charges.

Martin Ruiz, who did not play in the Penguins victory over Eastern Washington that sent the team to the FCS National Championship game, entered a not guilty plea to one count of improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle.

The indictment stems from an incident in Tallmadge on December 6, when Ruiz was pulled over in a vehicle with a loaded handgun in the glove compartment.

Ruiz is one of four players reportedly suspended from the team for violating NCAA drug policy.

Ruiz was released on $5,000 bond and is due back in court on December 27.
