YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown State University has run out of room for students to live on campus. But a Canfield development company is looking to change that.
Trilogy Realty & Development is looking to develop a housing complex for YSU students that could weigh in anywhere from $10 million to $12 million.
Kevin Willis, an architect with Strollo Architects, the firm working to design the complex, said the off-campus housing center would bring housing opportunities for approximately 200 additional students.
The Youngstown City Design Review Committee met Tuesday morning and paved the way for the project, approving the demolition of two buildings; the former St. Vincent DePaul Thrift store on Wick Avenue, and the building behind it known as Penguin Place on N. Champion Street.
The demolition would make way for the housing project.
Laura Fulmer, of the city's design review committee, said they must still approve the private student housing project, to be named Campus Lofts LLC. The committee has scheduled a meeting for April 9th to approve the design.
Willis tells 21 News that while schematics and designs are still in the works for the project, they do have several priorities in mind.
Willis said that Strollo Architects is focusing on maintaining security for the students that could live there, including electronic security system locks.
Also, the company hopes to design state-of-the-art internet services, a workout facility, a tanning area, and a video gaming area.
Fulmer says the project could break ground this summer and be ready for students for the Fall of 2020.
Youngstown State University officials said that the project is not affiliated with the university. However, all current university housing is at capacity, including the Edge and Enclave apartments.
