1980: Members of the Mahoning County Joint Vocational School Education Association are picketing the school. Superintendent Howard Friend said the school is open, although some buses carrying students turned around rather than cross the picket line.
In his first directive, Youngstown Mayor George Vukovich announces New City Hall hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and orders thermostats set at 65 degrees to save energy.

A malfunctioning gas furnace is believed to have caused a fire New Year's Day that gutted a brick dwelling at 540 W. LaClede Avenue. Six fire companies fought the blaze.

1945: Raymond R. Dickinson, 12, of East Palestine is killed and Frank Gibson, 11, is injured when a sled they were riding crashes into an automobile in Route 170.
Mahoning County Sheriff Ralph Elser and his deputies wreck the BSA Club and arrest the proprietor and a bartender. There were about 20 people in the place. Barbut and dice tables were smashed with axes.
