MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - The number of people who've died of the coronavirus in Mahoning county continues to increase, now up to 31 as of Friday afternoon.

Overall, 358 people have tested positive for the virus in the county, which has had the highest death toll in Ohio, despite having a significantly smaller population than Cuyahoga county, which has the next highest number.

Mahoning county heath officials have said they will not release zip code data to further specify where in the county cases may be, noting that since the disease spreads throughout the community, the data could be misleading, since many people live in one zip code, but work or shop in others.

The county and state health departments have both acknowledged that there are hotspots around some nursing homes, although they have declined to say which facilities.

As of Friday, 45 percent of those who've died of the virus have been residents of long-term care facilities and only six percent have been under the age of 60.

96 percent have had underlying health conditions.

A slim majority of cases, 53 percent, have been female, but 67 percent of the deaths have been males.
