WPD Officer jumps into river to help rescue Austintown canoeist

WARREN, Ohio - A man who was attempting to rescue a canoeist from the rushing waters of the Mahoning River got help from a Warren Police Officer.
Police were called to the Summit Street Bridge at around 5:30 pm Sunday after witnesses called 9-1-1 to report that a woman had gone under the water after her canoe capsized at the waterfall just north of the bridge.
The first officer to arrive spotted a man trying to pull the woman to the shore. The officer waded into the water and helped the man bring the woman out of the water
Another police officer began to administer CPR on the woman until firefighters could arrive with a portable defibrillator.
The victim, a 41-year-old Austintown woman, was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
The woman’s eyes are open, but she is expected to remain on a ventilator for a few days, according to the police report.
