Memorial Day weekend has arrived in the Valley, this year under unusual circumstances. While most shoppers have now adjusted to new grocery store hours, requirements and recommendations due to the coronavirus, there are some additional changes coming this weekend.

Across the Valley, most stores are expecting an increase of customers beginning Friday, and continuing throughout the Memorial Day weekend. There are some grocery stores that will close to observe the holiday, while others will remain open.

Rulli Brothers in Austintown will be closed on Memorial Day, but will continue to operate under the normal store hours of 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m up until Saturday. The store is also closed on Sunday. Store Manager Joe Richards tells 21 News his store has been busier than normal throughout the day Friday, and expects another rush this weekend. He says customers shouldn't worry, as Rulli Brothers are taking every precaution in response to COVID-19.

"We provide masks and gloves," Richards said. "We have everything marked out for six-foot distance. [Customers] can expect us to implement that in all of our departments."

Rulli Brothers is also limiting some items from the meat department, especially on-sale items. Some items, including ground meat and chicken breast, is currently limited to no more than five pounds total per customer.

Giant Eagle locations in Boardman, Austintown and Howland will open their doors on Memorial Day with the normal hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Giant Eagle says masks are highly recommended, but customers won't be turned away if they aren't wearing one. Meat items at Giant Eagle locations throughout the Valley are also in place. On-sale meat items will be limited to two packages per person, along with the higher-selling items such as hamburger meat. In a statement, Spokesperson Jannah Jablonowski said, "We're pleased with how effective the operational changes we've implemented to date have been and will continue with our enhanced in-store sanitation and social distancing measures."

Sparkle Market locations on Meridian Road in Austintown, and Western Reserve Road in Poland will also be open on Memorial Day from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sparkle Market stores are limiting meat purchases to two packages "per animal source." For example, customers can purchase two packages of bacon, as well as two packages of ground beef in the same transactions, but can't purchase four packages of ground beef in the same transaction, according to a sparkle employee.

White House Fruit Farm in Canfield will be closed to observe Memorial Day, but will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. White House is now allowing walk-in shopping at this time. A full list of walk-in and curbside hours can be found here.
