ACTION Executive Director urges everyone to attend forum on policing in the Valley

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - On Tuesday, June 23rd, a townhall will take place to discuss policing in the Valley. Rose Carter, the Executive Director of ACTION, says it's imperative people show up and take the next steps to try and strengthen the relationship between the community and local law enforcement.
"We need to have a better understanding of how the police departments we're talking about now, how the police can work better with us but also how we as the community can work better with the police," Carter said.
Carter says it's important that law enforcement have a better connection with the people they were sworn to serve and protect.
"Get to know us, don't stereotype us, get to know us," Carter said. "You don't live in our community so it makes it a little bit more difficult, but talk to us, understand where we are coming from, even that person you stopped that committed a crime, they're still a human being."
Carter says ACTION has a special relationship with the Youngstown Police Department and commends Chief Robin Lees for progress made over the years. She wants that progress to continue though. ACTION is part of a local group demanding that area law enforcement make policy changes.
"We're not saying we have not progressed and we are not saying we have not come a long way but we still have a long way to go," Carter said.
For Carter, she plans to see this journey until the end.
"We will not stop. Now, I'm speaking for ACTION and if I have to do it myself, which I won't have to, we will not stop."
