STRUTHERS, Ohio - The city of Struthers has accepted the resignation of a now-former officer, who was at the center of a social media firestorm involving expletives and a racial slur.

Mayor Cat Cercone Miller said Michael Trolio resigned from his position Wednesday.

Trolio was placed on suspension last week after an audio recording surfaced online of him using "inappropriate language," according to a disciplinary letter from Chief Tim Roddy.

Chief Roddy wrote that the language used in the audio recording was not acceptable for a Struthers Police Department employee and added it's especially troubling in light of recent national events.

"Your choice of words has resulted in negative public comments about you and may adversely affect the public's perception of the entire department," Roddy wrote.

According to Roddy, Trolio did not have a history of disciplinary action. Trolio served at the department for 14 years as a part-time officer.

He was promoted to full time in 2013.

Trolio was required by the department to write an apology, specifying the reason as to why such language should not be used by a police officer.
