Portion of Fifth Avenue closed as Smart Two Project begins

YOUNGSTOWN - A portion of 5th Avenue in Youngstown closed early Thursday and road work will continue through the summer with more closures and detours.
The intersection of Commerce Street and Fifth Avenue is now closed and will see the most dramatic change as part of a multi-million dollar project to modernize and improve the safety of downtown Youngstown as part of the Smart Two Network project.
The roadwork will reduce the multiple lanes on Fifth Avenue to one lane in each direction with a median while also increasing sidewalk areas.
Detour signs are posted in the area advising travel toward Belmont Avenue.
The city says construction on these portions of the road will take place until around September 11th.
Detours in the area will continue to change as the project develops.
