YOUNGSTOWN -  A demolition crew is tearing down a home on Youngstown’s West Side that was infested with cats and rats.

As an excavator was being used Thursday morning to demolish the two-story home on Greenwood Street, a few more cats were caught.

Some cats were trying to go back inside the house even as it was being torn down.

Just last week humane authorities say they found about 100 cats inside the home, as well as estimated one-thousand rats, infesting the surrounding neighborhood.

While city officials described it as a “terrible health issue”, neighbors complained of foul odors coming from the home.

Some of the rats had burrowed underground and in the structure of the house, according to Youngstown Law Director Jeff Limbian.

City officials "red-tagged" the home, designating it as uninhabitable.

Ninety-seven cats were taken from the home. Some were already deceased. Others were pregnant and one was even in active labor.

The woman living inside the home was taken to the hospital for an evaluation and Adult Protective Services was contacted to care for the woman.

Animal Charity, which is caring for the cats, is asking for donations to help care for these animals.
