1995: For the fifth straight year, Eileen Mitchell of Austintown organized a troupe of about 30 carolers to visit nursing homes and the homes of senior citizens where they performed Christmas favorites.
 
The Rev. Kenneth L. Simon says he thought long and hard before accepting the challenge of succeeding his father, the Rev. Lonnie Simon, as pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church.
 
Pat Modell, wife of the owner of the Cleveland Browns, says fans should not be mad at her husband, Art, for moving the team to Baltimore, which she said lost $21 million in two years. She said the move will help insure that their son, David, will run the team in the future. 
 
1980: Leonard Kirtz, president of Anchor Cigar in Youngstown, says the 85-member Ohio Association of Tobacco and Candy Distributors, will sue the state to halt implementation of legislation that will require them to collect state cigarette taxes at their own cost. 
 
Kim Terlecky, who normally saves $12 to $15 a week on groceries by using coupons, has an extraordinary day at Cochran Sparkle Market using coupons and manufacturer refund forms to get $129.04 worth of groceries and products for $4.39.
 
Three hundred mourners crowd into New Hope Baptist Church for the funerals of Mrs. Gainelle Jessie Lewis Evans, her 16-year-old son Randy and six grandchildren who died in a fire Dec. 20. Pastor Joseph Bankston reminded people that they could still find comfort through God's love. 
 
1970: Pictured hanging an ornament on his Christmas tree is 4-year-old Charles Franklin of Youngstown who was born three months after his father, Maj. Charles E. Franklin, disappeared on a bombing mission in Vietnam. Maj. Franklin has been listed as missing in action since 1966.
 
Ron Smith, a YSU junior from Canfield, pours in 38 points to lead the Youngstown State Penguins to a 76-55 victory over Cleveland State.

1945: Empty shelves in Youngstown stores attest to the biggest shopping rush in the district's history. More than 150,000 people rode busses during the peak shopping hours of Christmas Eve.
 
Capt. Philip H. Schaff Jr. of Youngstown, who won the Distinguished Flying Cross twice for long-range reconnaissance flights over China, returns home. 
 
Separation centers report 124 more Youngstown district men have been discharged from the armed forces.
