NEWTON FALLS, Ohio - Newton Falls Council is considering a move that could reduce electric rates for all residents and small businesses, but some council members say they still have more questions than answers.

The proposed move calls for Newton Falls to transfer city-owned electric transmission lines to a non-profit called "AMP Transmission." In exchange the city would get at least $3 million dollars.

Those in favor say the move would transfer the cost of maintenance and regulations off of the city. While those opposed question if it's wise in the long run and how long a reduction in rates would last.

"We can make an estimate but the market is going to be determining the cost of the electricity we are purchasing," said City Manager David Lynch. "My estimate is (a savings of) somewhere around 20% for a minimum of 5 years."

Council is expected to vote on the issue next week. Although, there was discussion of tabling the vote while more information could be gathered and considered. Some council members were critical that a proposed contract was not available for review.
