Suspected Mt. Carmel Church vandal to receive mental health treatment
The suspect in February's destruction of several statues at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Youngstown was ordered to receive mental health treatment.
Caleb Vancampen, 20, received a court order Thursday to go receive a mental health evaluation.
Youngstown Municipal Court officials said that a status hearing was set for June to follow up on how he progresses.
Police said Vancampen is accused of vandalizing 16 fiberglass statues, along with two granite statues and a light pole globe overnight on February 26.
Some of the statues appear to have been struck by bricks. The others were decapitated.
Church officials said the church had never experienced such damage.
After officers spoke with Vancampen, he was charged with felony vandalism.
According to court records, Vancampen is from Kentucky and is homeless, although police said he's been living in East Palestine.
