Youngstown sewage pipe causes flooding in homes

Mold found making it's way up walls, sewer water deep enough to submerge your entire foot in and then some.
Those are some of the conditions people found their basements in after pipes backed up into their homes.
Home owners say it's been a real disaster.
"The first half of it took me two days to clean and suck all the water out of all the cabinets and stuff I had," said one of the victims. "And the second half, I haven't even started on it yet, I mean, it's..it's bad," they said.
Owners say they've lost irreplaceable things that were precious to them.
"Our basement was 4 foot high. It was full of water. Our 3,600 dollar furnace is gone, our hot water tank is gone, thousands and thousands of memories are washed down the drain," another victim said.
In response to all of this, city officials tell 21 News they believe the backup was related to tree roots being clogged into the system, but are still assessing the situation.
"We have root saws that go through the sewer and actually cut the sewers out," said Chuck Shasho, Deputy Director of Public Works in Youngstown. "We'll jet and clean them and apply some root tech to limit the root invasion," he said.
Shasho says there have been talks about using American Rescue Plan money on the pipes.
"Water and waste water from what I can see...is something that is eligible, it's certainly not enough money to replace all the sewer lines in the city obviously, but it could go a long way or could, you know, help impact that a little bit," Shasho said.
The city is sending workers out to rectify the flooding situation and are accomodating residents as best they can.
