WARREN, Ohio - One of Warren's drop-off sites for recyclable items located at an area church will close because officials said it has been misused.

The recycling drop-off containers located in the parking lot of Christ Episcopal Church on Atlantic Street NE will be permanently removed on Monday, May 24.

The containers were placed to allow residents to recycle household bottles, cans, jugs, jars and paper/cardboard.

However, members of the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District said some people have also used it to dispose of mattresses, furniture and other items deemed unacceptable.

Staff at Christ Episcopal Church and the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District have had to spend time and money removing those items.

They said the unsightly trash and necessary effort to remove these items has put undue strain on the church, so they have asked that the site be permanently closed.

Residents are asked to take their accepted recyclables to one of our other nearby sites in Warren or Howland.

"We want to give residents every opportunity to recycle, but if some regularly misuse the site as a trash dump, we cannot continue to keep the site open. Even residents who bring accepted materials can cause major problems if they place their items on the ground next to the bins, if the bins are full. This typically happens on weekends. The bins are emptied on Fridays, but by Monday morning most of the drop-off sites are full or overflowing with items all over the ground. The township/city staff or property owners spend hours removing all trash from the ground once the bins are emptied on Mondays. If the bins are full, please wait to recycle your items. Tuesdays are great days to recycle easily at most sites. You can go to our website and see what days your local recycling site is emptied," said Jennifer Jones, Geauga-Trumbull SWMD Director.
