Police chase ends in Girard crash, driver allegedly intoxicated

GIRARD, Ohio - A man is facing multiple charges related to a police chase after crashing his car allegedly while under the influence.
Police initially responded after hearing screeching tires around 2 a.m. in the area of Belmont Avenue in Liberty.
A Pontiac G6 was then pursued for an alleged traffic violation along Trumbull Avenue.
According to a police report, the car began driving recklessly at a high rate of speed.
After crossing into Girard, the car made more reckless moves and crashed into a mailbox, then into a large bush where the car came to a stop near Verona Street, according to police.
Police identified the driver as 29-year-old, Tyler Walsh.
Walsh was trapped inside the car and rescue crews were called to the scene to remove him from the wreck.
Police say while Walsh was being removed from the vehicle he made several statements that he had crashed the car on purpose and he "didn't want to live anymore."
Officers say Walsh was clearly under the influence due to his slurred speech.
Walsh was charged with failure to comply and reckless operation.
Later, Girard Police say they recovered a handgun from under the gas pedal of the vehicle and the department would be persuing charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and having weapons while intoxicated.
Walsh was taken to Mercy Hospital for undisclosed injuries.
