BOARDMAN, Ohio - The Boardman Police Officer that shot a man during an incident in Boardman on Tuesday has been identified by the Boardman Police Department.

Officer Evan Beil is on paid administrative leave pending the department's investigation into the shooting of 24-year-old Damien Cessna.

A police report says the incident occurred just before 1 a.m. Tuesday morning when Officer Beil stopped Cessna, who was riding a bike and carrying a baseball bat on South Avenue near Mathews Road in Boardman.

Cessna allegedly threatened Officer Beil with a knife, and refused to obey Beil's repeated requests for him to drop his weapon.

An officer later said a large knife was found laying on the ground near Cessna after Cessna was apprehended.

Beil radioed in and requested back up, and soon after announced "shots fired, shots fired," according to the police report. Cessna was shot several times.

Reports say Cessna was taken to the hospital and remains in stable condition after a surgery.

Damien Cessna is charged with felonious assault.

Officer Beil will remain on administrative leave per Boardman Police Department policy.
