Driver fleeing police crashes, cuts power to hundreds in Champion

CHAMPION TWP., Ohio - The Ohio State Highway Patrol says four vehicles were involved in a crash that injured two people and cut power to hundreds of homes and businesses in Champion, Bristol and Warren townships.
Troopers say 30-year-old Steven Jeter, Jr. of Youngstown, OH, was driving a Dodge Challenger trying to elude a Champion Police officer along State Route 45 just after 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Police told 21 News that Jeter had fled from an earlier traffic stop along Housel Craft Road.
The Patrol says Jeter’s car drove left of center around stopped traffic and struck a Dodge Dart being driven by a juvenile female that was turning onto Route 45 from Route 305.
Jeter’s car then struck a Cadillac that was stopped at a traffic light.
Jessica Thornton, 36 years of age, of Bristolville, OH, was northbound on SR 45, stopped at a red traffic light, in a 2016 Cadillac ATS.
The Challenger then drove off of the road, striking two telephone poles before overturning into a ditch.
Debris from the telephone poles struck a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, which was parked in the Dollar General parking lot.
Jeter was transported to St. Joseph’s ER, in Warren, to be treated for minor injuries. The juvenile female was also transported to the ER for minor injuries.
Ohio Edison restored power to more than 700 customers in just over two hours. Route 45 was closed in both directions from SR 305 to Glendola Avenue until the poles were repaired.
Charges for fleeing and eluding are being handled by Champion Township Police and Bazetta Township Police.
