YOUNGSTOWN - An incident involving a weapon at Cardinal Mooney High School caused the school to go into lockdown Wednesday morning and led to one student reportedly being taken into police custody.

Police said 18-year-old Dante Miller brought three handheld firearms into the school, one of which was loaded. Cardinal Mooney President Thomas Maj said school officials were notified of a weapons offense made by a student early in the day. Maj confirmed that Youngstown Police were quickly called and a large officer response was sent to the building.

The student who allegedly made the offense was taken into police custody shortly after. He was charged with three counts of Illegal
Conveyance or Possession of Deadly Weapon/Dangerous Ordnance in School Safety Zone, each is a level 5 felony.

"We immediately activated and followed our emergency plan," President Maj said. "We were able to secure our concerns and we are back to normal operations."

Students' parents were made aware of the incident after the lockdown was lifted, according to Maj.

Maj also said that the investigation had been entirely handed over to Youngstown Police. The student will reportedly be arraigned on Friday.

While Maj would not specify what disciplinary action the student suspect could face, he promised that the school would handle the situation as required by Cardinal Mooney's policies.

"We'll do what we are required to do," Maj said.

Cardinal Mooney administration expressed pleasure in the swift action taken by Youngstown Police officers.

Students had resumed classes for the rest of the school day after the police presence and are reportedly running procedures as normal.
