Columbiana County Humane officials say just a couple of hours after word spread across social media that a small, lost dog showed up at the scene of a house fire, the pet's owner came forward.

The Leetonia Fire Department was hoping someone would claim the small Jack Russell Terrier. They posted a picture of the pup to their Facebook page and said "please share."

At the time, crews were on the scene of a house fire along Salem Grange Road.

The house was considered a total loss, but the family that lived there was able to escape unharmed, Leetonia Fire officials said.

The dog did not belong to the owners of the home that was on fire. Humane officials said the dog was doing okay, but was wet and smelled like smoke.

Just a couple hours later, humane officials say someone who recognized the dog on social media contacted its owner. The dog was returned and is now safe at home.

Meanwhile, firefighters don't know what started the fire. An investigation is ongoing. About a half dozen fire departments were called to the scene.
