1997: Canfield Township trustees say they have been surprised by the lack of public reaction -- for or against -- their decision to negotiate the purchase of part of Camp Stambaugh for a township park.
Former Brainard Rivet workers still want to buy the Girard plant, even though resurrecting it will be more difficult since it closed two weeks ago.
Jib Jab Hot Dog Shoppe at 313 S. State St., Girard, celebrates its 25th anniversary with 25-cent chili dogs -- limit of 25 per person.
1982: Youngstown Councilmen George McKelvey and James Fortune stringent regulation of video games in public game rooms.
Nine-year-old Greg Hudson of Draper Street, Warren, dies of injuries suffered a week earlier when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle.
Mr. and Mrs. David Quinlan of Canfield have provided an all-expenses-paid, five-day trip to Disney World for Missy Vinion, 11, who has cystic fibrosis, and her mother, Kathy, of Austintown.
1972: Mahoning County Common Pleas Court judges order a 5.5 percent increase for their employees. County Commissioner George Bindas complains that this is the second year in a row that judges ordered pay increases after the budget was set.
Philip J. Mika of Canfield and John L. Zumrick Jr. of Youngstown are among those receiving doctor of medicine degrees from the Ohio State University.
U.S. Rep. Charles J. Carney, D-Youngstown, receives an honorary doctor of laws degree after speaking at graduation ceremonies at the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa. He says more internships should be available in the United States, which is accepting 5,000 to 6,000 doctors each year from foreign countries.
1947: Youngstown Detective Ted O'Connor is the city’s "Father of the Year" based on an essay written by his daughter, Mary, a junior at Chaney High.
After a week of rain, Youngstown basks in the sun with temperatures reaching 94 degrees, one degree short of the record for the date set in 1920.
The toll from recent tornados rises to seven as Stephen Tomko, 73, dies from overexertion while working on his home on Orchard Street in Sharon.
