21 WFMJ-sponsored Drug Drop-Off Day brings in 300 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs

Mahoning Valley - A partnership between 21 WFMJ and the Ohio Attorney General's Office got nearly 300 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs off the streets in the Mahoning Valley.
Drug Dropoff Day was held last Saturday, July 16 with the help of the Youngstown Police Department and the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office.
The Valley is a hot spot for opioids according to the Attorney General's office with Trumbull County ranked sixth in opioid deaths and Mahoning County ranked 10th.
During the event, the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office collected 112 pounds of drugs and 20 pounds of needles and syringes.
Fire Station #9 in Youngstown also collected 166 pounds of drugs.
Included in the collections were unused or expired prescription medications that can do harm to people if not used correctly.
“There’s no better way to reduce the risk of medications ending up in the wrong hands – or, potentially, in the water supply,” Attorney General David Yost said. “It’s not environmentally friendly to flush unused prescriptions down the drain or toss them in the trash, which is why we value our partners in helping promote proper storage.”
