Youngstown police reporting increase in vehicle thefts, break-ins

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown police are warning residents of a recent uptick in reports of vehicle thefts, as well as vehicle break-ins throughout the city within the last couple of weeks.
Police say the targeted vehicles appear to be late-model Hyundai and Kia's. Suspects appear to be targeting unlocked cars and taking easily accessible valuables from within.
According to police, these thefts are most common during the night.
Police suggest residents take common-sense approaches to avoid being the victim of these thefts and break-ins, such as locking your car and not leaving certain valuables such as spare keys, cash, credit cards, ID cards, firearms, and your vehicle registration containing your address inside the vehicle.
Other tips include having bright working lights around your house and installing security cameras to capture any thefts or break-ins or any attempts to do so.
If you see someone trespassing on your property trying to access your vehicle, do not confront them and instead call 911 and provide a good description of the suspect.
Police also suggest installing a column lock or other disabling device to prevent your vehicle from being driven away.
