WARREN, Ohio - Valley Congressman, Tim Ryan has announced on Thursday that the Western Reserve Port Authority (WRPA) has been awarded a $268,211 grant from the Economic Development Agency (EDA) to develop a study of the Youngstown Warren Regional Airport's potential to drive economic growth.

Ryan says as the Valley looks to build its economy and dominate the industries of the future such as electric vehicles and natural gas, the airport can play a huge role in driving the economy.

"I am proud of the work WRPA has done at the airport and I will keep fighting to bring federal investments back into our region," Ryan said.

"The Regional Assets Plan is a key foundational step towards planning YNG's continued role as an economic driver in the Mahoning Valley. This study will focus on training the next generation of the aeronautics industry workforce and address projected industry shortfalls," said WRPA Executive Director, Anthony Travena.

Travena added that this data-driven approach will target new market sectors and strategic partners while allowing the Mahoning Valley to remain competitive in a global market.

Closures and layoffs from COVID-19 have exacerbated long-term economic distress for the Mahoning Valley.

This study will detail market trends in aviation, aeronautics and defense-related aerospace sectors, which will support workforce development, provide sustainable income in these industries and stabilize the regional economy.
