FirstEnergy is blaming the weather for power outages that at one point left nearly 4,400 homes and businesses in Trumbull and Mercer counties in the dark early Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the utility told 21 News that wet snow and high winds brought down trees, causing some of the outages.

There were several reports of fallen branches and sparking transformers in Trumbull County.

As of 5:30 a.m., the utility was reporting 3,892 outages in Trumbull County and 507 outages in Mercer County.

By 9 a.m. there were still more than 900 outages in Mercer County with most of those outages in Shenango and New Vernon Townships.

Trumbull County still had more than 400 outages.

Because of the widespread damage, FirstEnergy is not offering an estimation of when power will be back on.
