Fines beginning Tuesday for speeders caught on camera in Youngstown school zones

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Drivers speeding through Youngstown school zones will have to pay a hefty fine beginning next week.
Starting Tuesday, February 21, people caught going over the 20-mile-per-hour speed limit will have to pay a fine between $100 and $150.
Since January 17, drivers caught speeding were given a citation, but not a fine.
The speed cameras have been effective in capturing speeders since their installation. A staggering 1,218 drivers were caught speeding just one day after being installed.
Since the speed zones were put in place, police have seen a 65 percent decrease in speeders.
The 20-mile-per-hour speed limit is in place Monday through Friday until 6 p.m. each night.
The cameras are in place at seven schools currently, including Chaney High School, East High School, Kirkmere Elementary, Rayen Early College, Stambaugh Charter Academy, Valley Christian School, Volney Rogers and Woodrow Wilson School.
The current plan is to grow the photo enforcement areas from seven schools to every school in the city.
